Meadow Pipits on the Move

søndag 1. oktober 2023
af Joseph Stephan

The day started with Anton L. opening the mist while Louis, Anton M. and I got ready for the daily morning observation at the sea. The weather was pleasant with around 15 degrees and a southwestern wind up to 5 m/s.

The wader and duck migration were quite slow, but the passerines migrated in continuously good numbers, especially the Meadow Pipits (Enpiber). We saw a total of 5776 Meadow Pipits (Engpiper), 145 Chaffinches (Bogfinke) and 295 Siskins (Grönsisken), to mention the most frequent ones. Additionally, we spotted one Hen Harrier (Blå kærhøg), three Merlins (Dværgfalk) and one Peregrine Falcon (Vandrefalk), which was my personal highlight of the day. You can see a comprehensive list of all observations here.

Anton managed to catch 72 birds including a Collared Dove (Tyrkerdue) and two Pied Flycatchers (Broget Fluesnapper). It was a quite good day for ringing, so David joined him for a couple of net runs. They closed the nets around 7 PM.

Later in the day I went to Skallingen with the polish folks for a rainy field trip. We walked all the way to the tip, which was exhausting and beautiful at the same time. :) We came back at the evening and rested for a bit before I started to prepare a pasta amatriciana for dinner. We enjoyed each other’s company, drank some beers, and had some hearty laughs before we went to our well-deserved beds.
