Litlle Bunting and Nuthatch

lørdag 23. september 2023
af Joseph Stephan

The day started with Anton opening the mist nets while Louis, Henrik, and I headed to the sea for our daily morning observation. We had a pleasant day at the observation site and counted a total of 688 Common Scoters (Sortand), three Velvet Scoters (Flöjlsand), 47 Widgeons (Pibeand), 78 Pintails (Spidsand), 21 Teals (Krikand), five Red-breasted Mergansers (Toppet Skallesluger), and 215 Red-throated divers (Rödstrubet Lom). Additionally, we observed relatively high numbers of Meadow Pipits (Engpiper) – precisely 2198 individuals. However, the absolute highlight of our day was a Little Bunting (Dvaergvaerling) gracing us with its presence, filling us with excitement for the hours ahead. You can see a comprehensive list of all observations here.

Anton managed to catch a total of 54 birds, including 15 Eurasian Blackcaps (Munk), 8 Willow Warblers (Lövsanger), 6 Garden Warblers (Havesanger), and four Chaffinches (Bogfinke) as the most frequent species. The highlight of the ringing was a beautiful Eurasian Nuthatch (Mörkbuget Spaetmejse).

As the sun set on this beautiful day at the Fuglestation, Anton surprised us with a mouthwatering lasagna that we savored with delight. We celebrated the Little Bunting's visit, relished each other's company, and went to bed feeling content and fulfilled.
